I spent a lot of time waiting in doctors’ offices last week, and I needed something to save me from boredom- and anxiety-induced insanity. What better choice could I have made than The Art of Language Invention by David J. Peterson?Back when I was a kid, one of my favorite books was Dougal Dixon’s After Man: a Zoology of the Future. As an exercise in speculative biology, the book is responsible for maybe 90% of my enthusiasm about evolution, anatomy, and animal behavior. The fact that I know anything about those subjects at all is because I was enthusiastic for them, which puts Dixon to blame for most of what I know about the natural world. When I read The Art of Language Invention, the same thing happened with linguistics.You can’t create a good made-up language without knowing about real languages. Through the lens of his invented languages and his experience using them, Peterson educates the reader about the forces that shape the way we speak—a practical gift wrapped in shiny packaging. Like all good speculation, The Art of Language Invention educates and inspires as much as it entertains.And it IS entertaining, if for no other reason than the cat and onion jokes.Go read it. I expect to see your new language on my desk by Monday.

If you’ve ever thought about creating a language, but didn’t know where to start, or you were intimidated or overwhelmed by the masses of terminology or “denseness” of other books, start here. If you’ve been creating languages for decades and just need a fresh perspective, a good laugh, or some commiseration, check this out. If you’re a linguistics student struggling with the basics, and your Intro to Linguistics reading is so dry you can’t choke it down, this could easily pass as a funny, entertaining, and fairly complete Linguistics 101 textbook, with some conlanging on the side.

I came across this title while reviewing a fascinating game in Kickstarter called "Dialect." When I was a teenager, I discovered Tolkien and, through Tolkien, the idea of constructed languages ("conlanging"). I was hooked, and my ambition was to become a linguist. While those ambitions faded over time, the interests did not, and this book kept me reading from front to back. The author's sense of humor as well as his enthusiasm for the work is infectious. The details he provides give a fantastic glimpse into the workings of language and writing, as well as a fascinating history of the art form.

If you have the patience yo go through several chapters of the anatomy of a language, before getting to the nitty gritty of how to build one, then this book is perfect for you. Despite the fact that I gook several linguistics courses during my Bachelors and masters degrees, I really struggled with the first part of the book. It can be daunting, with dozens of terms that only a linguist would recognize, but it had to be covered if one were to attempt constructing a decent language. The latter part was quite interesting, and I was especially fascinated by font creation. Now I'm ready to construct my first language (a hybrid of several languages as a result of 500 years of several cultures cohabiting on one new colonized planet.) Here goes.

The information provided (that I could get to) is incredible, especially for world building, but the Kindle version is full of formatting errors (or at least my version was). Pages missing, pages repeated, and other oddities throughout the first quarter of the book (I couldn't get past that for frustration, but I will go back and try again, because the gems in there are awesome). It was incredibly difficult to go through to get to the meat of the book. As a linguist and a polymath, I was champing at the bit to read this one, but the constant errors in pagination made it a slog. I hope the errors get corrected so that I can get to the good stuff, because Mr. Peterson's prose and knowledge certainly bear looking into.

I create languages for fun. This book validated a lot of what I was already doing and gave new and brilliant ideas and instruction that I'll definitely use in the future. It's a bit difficult to read if you aren't already passionate about language, linguistics, or how words work, but if you are, this is definitely worth reading.

Peterson is gifted in the area of language creation. I read part of this book as an excerpt and decided it would be well worth the purchase. I have enjoyed this book a lot, I've learned a lot, and I was entertained through the entire read. This will be one I keep within reach and refer to again and again.

I've been working on my own language since a high-school game I played with a friend. More recently I've been trying to make it realistic, but I just didn't know enough about languages. This book filled in quite a few holes in my knowledge! I overhauled my whole language from the roots up and I feel far more confident in it!

I bought this as a gift for my boyfriend, who loves both sloths and swearing. He was delighted--I believe his exact words were "I'm going to color the sh*t out of this!"I'm now concerned that he may decorate his whole house with these.They are single-sided, so you could rip the pages out and frame them or put them on the fridge or give them to people you don't like...you know, I really hope he doesn't read this review. There is also a nice preview page in the front that shows you all the designs, and some spots in the back to test out the colors before you add them to your sloths.I like to see pictures of the inside of coloring books like this before I buy, but I understand why they don't always do that. Maybe once my boyfriend colors a few of them I'll add some photos to this review.My only complaint is that the swear words are often repeated--some more than others. The c-word (which is probably the only swear word I don't like/am offended by) is way over-represented. But maybe I'm just a prude and most people would like that. That's the only reason I took off a star. But hey, my boyfriend is happy and that was the whole point.

I bought this for my boyfriend and the quality is amazing. It has varies words to color in. The designs are cool. Really got what I paid for!

I love reading his book so much I can hardly put it down. This book teaches the true meaning of God’s power and how he cares about all of us. Dr. Onebamoi has described and used great examples to elaborate how to unleash the power of God's word in your life. For example in chapter 3 pg 20 it states that; The Scripture declares that, "Man shall not live by bread alone but by every word [Rhema] that proceedeth out of the mouth of God' (Matthew 4:4). Dr. Onebamoi explained that here, Jesus Christ alludes to the fact that you need food to live but it’s not exclusively sufficient in itself as you also need the whole counsel of God's word. The word "Rehema" is a Greek word that refers to "total utterance of God, which is the complete revelation of what God has said. I recommend this book 100%

Some theater knives were fashioned for function out of necessity under duress and some were carefully put- together works of art made by skilled artisans in a shop aboard a ship or elsewhere that allowed for stunning craftsmanship to be realized. This book is useful in that it shows numerous examples of both ends of the spectrum. The photos are excellent. The format is the only criticism I have. Using the price guide is of nominal value, but I would say that the price guide is speculative anyway since many considerations go into determining value of one-off items. All of the information and the photos in this book are scattered all over the Internet at various sites along with many more times the amount of photos and information; but I LOVE books, and I like having a tangible, visual reference I can sit down with even though the Internet provides more depth and breadth if you are a savvy user. But you have to know how to phrase searches to find things and this book can serve as a great primer to the subject as well as entertain an advanced collector just based on the photos. I recommend the book.

This Book has some really nice pictures,lot and lots of pictures, actually it is more of a picture reference of WWII Theater Made Military Knives.I am not really sure where/how they are gauging the values. They seem to range dramatically and not always in accordance with the quality or appearence.Overall, It is a nice reference Book.

This book contains the same knife that my grandfather had. I was told that my great grandfather made it for my grandfather to take with him to WWII. I guess he made more than one. It is the same one as the one on the top row to the far right on the cover.

It is interesting seeing images of teenagers from all over the world. I absolutely love this book! Tamora Pierce's writing is engaging, creative and full of nuances that make these books fun for both teenagers and adults. Aly's voice is fresh, inventive and though she's young, she's not another annoying YA heroine. She learns from her mistakes and she's SMART. She stands up for what she thinks and she doesn't follow the herd. She's a heroine worth admiring.This was the first book I read of Tamora Pierce's world and even though it makes frequent mentions of other characters featured in her other series', I didn't feel lost at all. This story is well-paced, the world building is complete and presented in a sensible and easy to grasp way, and Aly's inventiveness brings the story a sense of fun and adventure that all ages identify with.Alianne (Aly) of Pirate's Swoop is the daughter of Alanna, the renowned first lady knight of Tortall. They give you the full essay examples, and then "tips" throughout of what you need to keep in mind. Timesaver. Recommend!

Brave man, tragic situation, determination to make a positive impact so that some families can have a better outcome. Shows that one person can be the start of something big, even though it takes lots of people to do the rest of the work. One person can inspire others to join him to accomplish something that he could not do alone. Thank you John Walsh for creating a new and better way of handling child abduction, and also an alternative way for the public to communicate with law enforcement. Not all by yourself of course, but you are a big part of the solution. One person can do a lot if it is the right person.

Such a heartbreaker to read up on the murder of 6-year-old Adam Walsh. I was not alive when this crime happened, but I grew up watching America's Most Wanted and didn't realize that it all got started because John Walsh's son was kidnapped and murdered in 1981. It was something of a history lesson for me to read about how so much has changed as a result of this and the Walsh family's activism. This book, while uncomfortable and heart wrenching, was eye opening and worth reading.

I read this book years ago, loaned it out and never got it back, and so re-ordered it. This is a heart-breaking story of a child's murder that makes one realize how vulnerable we can easily be, but also a fascinating story of a father who turned his grief into very worthwhile and badly needed endeavors which have undoubtedly saved children's lives. I admire John Walsh for all he has done to help recover missing children. Highly recommend this book.

I have just finished reading this book and it will stay with me forever. This is a book that everyone should read. It only takes a second for things to change forever. Adam Walsh was a beautiful child and was killed by a low life. My heart goes out the the John Walsh family. What they went through is unbeliveable! A nightmare! But they rose above their misery and reached out and helped sooo many people. They made a differance. This book has changed my life. In reading this book I could feel their pain and the struggles they went through trying to get justice for Adam. Because of John and Reve, we now have better laws in place and they have dedacated their lives in helping others. This book will open you eyes to the evil in this world. But because of good people like John and Reve Walsh it shows me what a difference we can make if we just try. I have the most respect for this couple and admire their courage!

Very interesting read! Some people stated that it was the parents fault because Adam was left alone in the store for a few minutes. I don't feel this way because it was not a long time that Adam's mother was gone and things were just different back then. I would not leave any child alone in a store today.... AND don't you think that Adam's mother thinks about that everyday......let's not judge.

This is the third time buying not only the movie but the book as well. With very addition to our family I make sure they read and watch both parts of Adam. Even with this day of cell phones young parents need to know and remember the fears of our world as well as the good. That it's alright to scream and yell and above all their area code. My heart still hurts for the Walsh's and I will always be greatful for everything they do. If you have not seen or read this book you should.

As a loyal fan of "America's Most Wanted" and a person who cares about children, I had to read this book. I must admit, I was a bit apprehensive about the contents when I first picked it up. I had heard about the Adam Walsh case prior to reading about it, so I knew how terrible his abduction and murder was. For this reason, I was afraid that I might come across some details that would be so graphic that I'd get discouraged. It's kind of like knowing about an incident that is so bad that you almost do not want the details. But John Walsh's book was informative, compassionate, and just plain well-written. It was not overly gory or negative. In fact, I had a hard time putting this book down. In this book, John Walsh was not merely an author recounting the events of a true and terrible crime. He was a human; a caring, grieving, and determined father who was pouring his heart out to you. Strange as this may sound, I felt his presence in the room when I was reading it. It was as though he was actually sitting across from me, talking to me. He told me his heartwrenching, yet inspiring story. His story held my full attention. Hearing about what happened to Adam and the terrible injustice that John and his wife faced brought tears to my eyes. It angered me. And it changed my outlook on life. I developed a whole new way of thinking. I learned that though I may not have always thought so, crime can happen to me. I do need to be aware. I learned that even though I deeply sympathize with the Walsh family, I will never truly know of their pain and other feelings because I have never actually walked in their shoes. It is only when you are a parent and your worst nightmare has come true that you can truly understand those feelings of anguish. Their story reminded me that we never know what we really have until it is gone. That's why it is important to be thankful for what you have. The Walsh family seems to really be trying to emphasize that: If you have children, realize that you hold a bond for each other that cannot be duplicated. Love those children with all your heart. Accept each of them as they are. Teach them as much about the world as you can. Give them everything you've got. And be careful. Be aware. Because you might wake up early one morning, and like John Walsh, kiss your child good-bye, go off to work (or somewhere else), and never see him or her again. Or like Adam's mother, you may go out with your child to do an errand and discover that your day has taken a terrible, unexpected twist. I will continue to watch "America's Most Wanted" until the show ends for good. I will also continue to pray at night for the security and safety of our children. I have started John Walsh's second book, "No Mercy". Though I have yet to finish it, reading it always leaves me on the edge of my seat! The Walsh family's caring and dedicated efforts are indeed an inspiration. Their work is making a difference in the lives of many. And I know in my heart that some day the Walsh's 3 children (1 daughter and 2 sons, all born after Adam's death)will follow in their parents' footsteps. They will succeed, and stand up for their beliefs. They will always be appreciated. And because they were raised in such a loving environment, they will find only happiness, courage, and strength. They will make wise choices. And have a world of wisdom and inspiration to share with their children and grandchildren. Each day they will be able to thank their wonderful parents- who started it all.

An outstanding read. I have recommended this book to everyone I know. Manly P. Hall tells you everything you already know the way you need to hear it. I am constantly quoting this book!

Being just a small pamphlet, its contents are quite pragmatic & very insightful. Under $10, I can't think of any other media that offers such a compass to navigate life.

Manly P Hall does an excellent job of lining out the ten basic rules for living - It's incredible how old the book is and yet it is still timely. Every shrink-y book today has the same outline in it.
