"Impeachment" is, perhaps, the most perfectly timed book in years. It is the elephant in the room in most every discussion of politics nowadays. And, it appears, our president is willing to risk everything now to maximize his influence in American governance and history.He is supremely confident that he can do just about anything he chooses to do. Personally, I think the odds are in his favor. The only viable gamble to stopping him, is impeachment. But, as this well-researched book shows, forcing this leader out, with a Republican-Majority Senate, is probably not possible, since it requires 2/3 of the senate to vote for conviction, assuming the House of Representatives votes for impeachment.Some opine that the House can and will subpoena tax records and so forth. Such moves are likely to for rulings by the Supreme Court, which is pretty well stacked in Pres. Trump's favor.So, again, we come back to "Impeachment," as the only viable check on executive branch power.I was enthralled by this study and its pragmatic conclusions. Over the coming days I will be following by my understanding of the conclusions of "Impeachment" by researching the footnotes included in the back pages. Comprising some 60 pages of the 314 total pages, I will be kept busy.BOTTOM LINEFor folks disappointed by, and demanding impeachment of the current president, I suggest, no, I urge you to read "Impeachment," to understand the totality of the risk involved and the probability that Mr. Trump emerges even stronger, and more arrogant than he is today.Five stars out of five.
I ordered the hardcover version on the hunch that this book might go into the “Keepers†section of my library.Alas, I never made it off the first page—not because of the content, but because it’s printed in an impossibly small type size.
Each author is an outstanding historian and author in their own right. The efforts made by each to present the case for impeachment against the three (3) Presidents that have faced the threat is well done. There is no favoritism shown in any of the cases presented or in the overview of the 25th amendment in relation to our current sitting President. This book seeks to help the votary understand the term "high crimes and misdemeanors" as understood by our Founding Fathers. I would encourage the readers of this book to read it in conjunction with the book "The Twenty-fifth Amendment" by John D. Feerick for a comprehensive view of the potential impact of impeachment. The relation of the two books will help the reader understand the foundation of this section of our Constitution.
Great read and a reminder of involvements of our past Presidents.
The authors present the history of the three previous presidential impeachments in clear, informed words. This makes understanding what is about to befall the soon-to-be-impeached (and I hope convicted) Trump much easier. Put into historical context, the outrageousness of Trumps criminal acts are even more alarming. Great book!
Since we are in a period of history when impeachment seems likely, this book lays out the legal and political requirements for impeachment. It is an excellent overview and the reader can better understand the challenge s of the process and why it has been used so sparingly.
I found this book to be fascinating in that each section was written by a different author/researcher except to the opening and conclusion which were both done by Jeffrey A. Engel. Jon Meacham addresses the circumstances surrounding the impeachment trial of Andrew Johnson and does a good job highlighting that it was more of a political attack at that time than one of committing high crimes and misdemeanors. Timothy Nafatli wrote about the near impeachment of Richard Nixon where there was a much more clear case of high crimes and misdemeanors revolving around the Watergate break-in and subsequent cover up along with numerous other questionable activities. Peter Baker digs into the impeachment trial of Bill Clinton and whether or not his actions met the test of high crimes and misdemeanors which the Senate eventually determined they did not. Jeffrey Engel does address the potential or lack thereof of an impeachment of the current president.I recommend this book for anyone with an interest in the impeachment process and how it has been used and abused in our political system.I received a free Kindle copy of Impeachment: An American History by Jeffrey A.
