THere are some very pretty things, but like other reviewers have said, its just a bunch of doily patterns blown up. Some of the projects look like the model is wearing their grandmothers table cloth. On the other hand, there are a couple of very nice patterns. Over all, not what I expected, but not totally disappointed. Ms. Chan's book "Everyday Crochet" is much better, and the projects are much more "wearable". What blows me away is to see sellers trying to hose $2,500 out of someone for this book. I'd sell my copy for a fraction of the cost. $2,500 is taking advantage of people.
I do like a lot of Doris Chan's patterns. Many in this book are too young for me to wear, however I do not crochet items solely for myself. I have a huge brood of children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, friends, coworkers, nursing home residents, homeless and others I crochet for too. That means LOTS of different styles, tastes and preferences. I make an item to fit the likes/dislikes of the person I'm crocheting for. These patterns aren't run-of-the-mill patterns and are more up-to-date for the tastes of many of my younger people I crochet for. Alternatives w/in the pattern itself are also given, so if you like the shell and shoulder snuggler pattern but don't have a midriff to show off anymore, you can alter the pattern but continuing the closed pattern rather than the open one. Choices, that's what I look for in patterns/books and she does give them to you. Use your imagination whenever using anyone's patterns, make it your own.
I am an avid crochetter and prefer lacy feminine patterns when crochetting shawls, ponchos, etc. I love the patterns in this book. Love the lacy shrugs. I agree with the reviewer who said that many of the patterns in this book are for the slimmer more petite figure. I do not wish to reveal my not-so-ideal shape; however, I do find the lacy and feminine styles inspirational and I do wear lacy shawls, and scarves. I will make most of the designs in this book for myself and my more petite friends. This book to me is worth the money I paid.
I have made other items from Doris Chan patterns and can't wait to make some of these items. The book is from 2006 and seems that some of the yarns used are no longer available. Since I only have skimmed it and have not tried any of them I cannot say how well the patterns are written, but from experience with other patterns of Doris...they should be well done.
It may just be me, but I could not find yardage information for each project that would allow me to use DIFFERENT yarn than what was stated in the pattern. I had to look up each yarn she refers to to determine both the weight and yardage. I have crocheted up a few of her FREE projects on ravelry.com, and LOVED them but I have yet to work on any of the projects in this book. The projects are lovely and I hope to start one in the very near future.
This is one of those books - like Twinkle and like Loop d Loop Crochet - that is love it or hate it. I seriously doubt anyone conservative would like the majority of the designs in here. I must admit though that I'm surprised by the people who were disappointed, the book is exactly what I expected from the cover picture - which does in fact look like a blown up doily - and I'm surprised anyone expected any different. Also, there are so many sites where you can get a few pics of contents as a preview. ....Taste differs - for anyone who's thinking about this book, I love what has been referrred to as the "oddlooking tank" and think it is incredibly hip.... probably the coolest thing in the book. Made it in a colinette ribbon and have been asked to sell it off my back. Which I won't.
This is the most jaw-dropping book on crochet that I own, and I own a shelf full of such books! The designs are just wonderful- the sort of beautiful things my grandmother used to make for the table- only made into fabulous wearable artwork in the form of shawls. These designs really do highlight the uniqueness and beauty of crochet, and make everyone who crochets proud of their art (a lot of recent books have tried to make crochet 'look more like' knitting). The patterns are well written, and the pictures are beautiful. Doris Chan seems to be a very creative person to have revived a lot of these patterns and made them into something fresh and beautiful for today. Who wouldn't be proud to make one of these shawls or to wear one?
