I really like this series of Piano theory books; I used them when I was a student. I didn't start with these until I was at about level three, though. I used this Fundamentals of Piano Theory Prep Level book with several of my piano students, and it is very good about going through all the different concepts very thoroughly. Each unit has a different purpose, whether it be note values, time signatures, etc. That helps me do lesson plans, since I can choose activities that will help cement in that unit of theory. I also really like that unlike some piano theory books, the student really has to think and make sure they put the right answer in the blanks. I remember one of my old books I literally just put the same answers in the same order whenever the page was about any kind of triad variations.I would recommend this book for older students who have a little bit of prior music knowledge or quick learners. I used it with ages ten and up (5th grade and up), but I will probably start using it with only 6th or 7th grade and up and find a different book for my 5th graders. Some of my 5th graders did pretty good with it, but some of them found parts a little confusing, especially since it goes all the way into dotted quarter notes on the first few pages! It can a little overwhelming for young or inexperienced students since it covers material they won't be playing quite yet on the keys (depending on which book you are using).
I recently began piano lessons in order to challenge and exercise my 40 year old mind. I was fortunate enough to get in touch with an amazing teacher who focuses on a strong foundation of piano. If he tells me to get this book, I get it. The book is clear and basic to understand. I have nothing to compare it to but my results have been steady and solid.
This book is part of a solid piano home study program. I’m about halfway through and now have a good base knowledge of piano theory. This book and the others in the series that I also have, are all full of excellent piano study materials. Great value for the price.
I like to use this in my studio. The sight reading exercises are a little too difficult for the level they are presented at. Otherwise it is great!
This is a great theory book for beginners. There are no unnecessary pictures that distract students along with clear directions on assignments. Also, each unit was thought out carefully, and it follows a very logical and systematic order. I use these books for all of my students.
