I found this a refreshing look at Romero from the perspective of his theological positions through the years with careful attention to the contexts of El Salvador and of the Church during his life.The author provides a perspective to the often-cited "conversion" of Romero after the death of his friend Fr. Rutilio Grande, helping one see that Romero was "evolving" in his theology, his spirituality, and his pastoral approach.Weaving together events from the life of Romero, the changing context of the Catholic Church and El Salvador during his life, and theology, the author presents what I see as a useful reading of Romero to deal with those who claim that Romero had a radical conversion after Grande's murder and with those who are trying to present a sanitized Romero, denying or glossing over his revolutionary pastoral practice.It is a work of theology, but I found it accessible.
