I really enjoyed this book and even though I have been to many places around the world, this guy did it all on foot or by boat or train if he ever could avoid a plane. I loved his sense of humor, he was at times very accommodating to people he hired on with on their sail boats and took some treatment from them I would have bailed on long before he did. A gabby one this guy is, he describes everything in detail but I liked it that way and I looked up everything to the point I thought I had taken his journey with him. Good book, I think you will enjoy reading. Oh, and unless you have a vast vocabulary you best keep the dictionary handy! It wasn't a pain, like every other sentence, nothing like that but . . . .

This is what the antithetical genre title "creative nonfiction" aims at but seldom achieves--pulled off effortlessly as an Addison & Steele essay, or Charles Lamb. I especially enjoyed the quotes from authors from Whitman to Kierkegaard to Ortega y Gasset, that served as epigraphs to each chapter.
This book epitomizes the pure joy of reading. When you combine a fascinating travelogue with the unsurpassed Australian sense of humor and a magnificent writing style, how could you go wrong? My hubby and I both read this and treasured every word. And sooooo interesting. The author transported me to the far places of the earth, showing them in all their exotic and colorful detail, while cementing in me a fervent desire never to go to any of them (well, most of them). Especially by sea!!!
A pretty amazing tale of how a young man made the trip from New Zealand to England without air travel. I wondered if he was ever going to get out of the southern hemisphere but he did make it. He had some incredible experiences along the way and more than his share of good luck. I enjoyed this book.
I rarely write a book review but feel compelled to do so for this book. It is a total delight to read if you love travel adventure. The carefree adventures of this young man could not be replicated in today's world but I thoroughly enjoyed imagining this journey. I am just so happy that he wrote it all down for us to enjoy!
I enjoyed the author's wanderings and near-misses of various sorts that made me want to keep reading, but don't consider the book a keeper.
